Question

A population of mayflies has an initial size of 100 individuals. After one year of reproduction the new population size is 200 individuals. Estimate the following parameters:

1. The rate of population increase (λ)

2. The population size at generation 9 (t+9)

3. What is the doubling time of the population?

4. Estimate and graph the change in population size from t to t+5.

5. Repeat calculations and plot the estimates for λ = 0.5, 1.0. and 2.0.

6. Discuss the pattern of population growth based on each λ graphed above (I'd suggest to plot them all on the same graph).

7. What would you expect if you let the population growth for, say, 10,000 generations?
