1. A biologist wishes to determine the density of an oil sample that she has extracted from a rare species of plant. She puts some distilled water (with some food coloring added for visibility) in a small U-tube and then pipettes the oil sample in on top of the water. The system comes into equilibrium as shown below. If the water has a density of 1000 kg/m3 then what is the density of the oil?
