Case Study: Prompt: Building on (and perhaps contrasting with) the earlier module's focus on competitiveness between countries, this module will focus on human development, what it means and how it is measured. To participate in this discussion and to prepare for the Country Comparison discussion, read the September 2022 Human Development Report, which is a nearly-annual report published by the United Nations. This report includes measurement of a Human Development Index (HDI), and the 2020 version of the report added a more explicit focus on environment issues and how they relate to human development.
To prepare for this discussion, read the Overview section of the Human Development Report (pages 1-14 of the pdf version) and evaluate the Human Development Index data. Read additional sections of the report and additional sources to pursue the aspects that you find most relevant and interesting. Then respond to the questions:
Questions:
1. What is human development, and how should it be measured? In your response, discuss the extent to which the UN's Human Development Index measures accurately capture human development.
2. What is the relation between human development (this module) and competitiveness (previous module), if any? Explain your answer.
3. In reviewing the Human Development Report, what is one unique insight you gained from the report? Focus on an insight that has not already been shared by another student.
