The readings from our textbook this week give us a behind the scenes look at the production of popular culture and the ways in which large media companies impact what we ultimately consume (e.g. types of music, film, tv, etc.). In addition, the readings give us a sense that there is very little here that is "authentic," "real" or a genuine reflection of society. Jean Baudrillard goes so far as to state that the "real" has been replaced by simulations and copies and that "authenticity" is has disappeared in the modern world. We live in artificially created, mass produced, synthesized and pre-packaged "cultural" spaces that are copies of something. Get the instant assignment help.
Pick a genre of pop culture (music, film, tv, fashion, sports, cultural landscapes [see Grazian 192], etc.). In what ways is your genre of pop culture pre-packaged by others (designers, producers, owners, CEOs, etc.)? What (values, people, experiences, voices, perspectives) is left out? What is forced upon us? Is there any dimension of this genre which remains "authentic"?
