Assignment:

In at least 300 words, answer these questions using The Truman Show and The First Meditation (pages 1-3 only)

1. Explain what you think the Painter's Analogy is here. How are dreams like paintings? How is the Collage Scene in The Truman Show an example of what is being discussed in the Painter's Analogy?

2. What is Descartes saying when he says that the visions that come in sleep (dreams) must have been made as copies of real things? What is his reasoning here, and how do the examples of mythical creatures like sirens and satyrs support his conclusion? We know that the face in the Collage Scene is not real, but the elements that make up the face do come from real faces that are photographed. So even if the face that Truman creates isn't real, the more basic elements that make it up must be.

3. At the end of paragraph 8, Descartes writes that "although these general kinds of things-eyes, head, hands and so on-could be imaginary, there is no denying that certain even simpler and more universal kinds of things are real. These are the elements out of which we make all our mental images of things." Why is there no denying that certain simpler and more universal kinds of things are real? And what are those simpler and more universal kinds of things (see the next paragraph, paragraph 9)? How is this reasoning an example of the reasoning you see in the Painter's Analogy?
