Questions:

  1. What is an existentialist and what are they primarily concerned with? Why do many existentialists think that traditional philosophy is heavily useless? What question did Kierkegaard believe philosophy needed to answer for the individual?
  2. Explain what the "universal formula" is and how Kierkegaard attempted to apply it in his own life. What happened and what impact did the failure of the universal formula have on Kierkegaard's philosophical perspective?
  3. Kierkegaard is an unusual philosopher. He provocatively stated: "truth is subjectivity." What did he mean by this? What is wrong, according to Kierkegaard, with objective claims of truth? What type of damage did he think adherence to objective notions of truth did to the individual? Why did he worry about people becoming "types" of people?
  4. Explain Kierkegaard's notion of authenticity and inauthenticity. Why were these notions important to Kierkegaard? Explain how he applied these concepts to the Christian church.
  5. Kierkegaard claimed that individuals must strive to exist. What did he mean by this? In what way might someone live their life, yet fail to exist? (Hint: it has to do with relating to concepts and objective notions rather than their own experience-in other words their own existence becomes a safe abstraction for them rather than something that is felt and personal).
  6. List the 3 stages of life that Kierkegaard describes and the attributes of each stage.
