HR can scan the environment and keep up-to-date with what is affecting their organizations in various ways.
One is by looking at different publications and articles and blogs. For example A tech company might stay ahead of the trends by subscribing to blogs such as tech crunch, wired, and recode. By reading, and learning they are staying ahead, and scanning the environment and can build a competitive advantage to attract and retain employees. In failing to do so, this will affect their organization as some employees will leave to develop their career with newer technologies.
Another way to scan an environment is by being a part of professional associations- HR Specific (CPHR). Understanding what current practices are and what some competitors are doing, as well as knowledge sharing amongst peers, and assessing their organization's current practices to see if they are up to date.
And lastly, HR scanning can be done by attending conferences, seminars, and industry events. Through networking and learning about other organizations, an HR professional can put together a SWOT to really understand where the organization stands and can better forecast for succession planning.
