Nathan:
I believe the term political machine encompasses many different aspects to the election and political process. There is the aspect of the candidates themselves - their look, their appearance, their background and even where they fall in under the umbrella of identity politics is scrutinized by would be donors and party affiliates.
There is also how well the politician is able to regurgetate the party talking points, agenda, and appeal to the people. Then you have everyone that surrounds the politican - the lobyists, the donors, the campaign/office staff, and party affiliates.
There is also the wave of current hot topics that will steer the political boat, with everyone wanting to jump on board the next big perceived idea - for example the "Green New Dea," which Democratic Presidentail hopefulls were all quick to jump on before actually reading what was inside it. Politics has become more of a well controlled strategy came than it is about actual governing.
