Question: Based on the patients' varying histories and what you know about natural selection, what hypothesis can you make from your observations? A positive test following antibiotic treatment means a mutation has occurred in the patient's genes, making them resistant to antibiotics. Incomplete eradication of a pathogenic infection by an antibiotic can result in natural selection of bacteria with antibiotic-resistant genes. Natural selection will occur when N. gonorrhoeae contains a mutated gene, and N. gonorrhoeae without the mutation will have greater survival rates compared to the bacterial strains with the mutated gene. A positive test prior to antibiotic treatment means natural selection has created a genetic mutation for antibiotic resistance in N. gonorrhoeae in the patient.
