Each dimensionless term has a physical significance as well as a mathematical one. For example, the Reynold’s number, Re describes the ratio of the transfer of momentum by convection to the transfer of momentum by diffusion. This is an important ratio in fluid flow because the two dominant ways that momentum are transferred in a fluid are by convection and diffusion. Similarly the Prandtl number, Pr describes the ratio of the transfer of momentum by diffusion to the transfer of heat energy by “thermal diffusion” (conduction). This ratio is important for understanding what happens in stagnant or nearly stagnant fluids when they are heated. If we multiply Re*Pr, we should get a dimensionless term that describes the ratio of the transfer of momentum by convection to the transfer of heat energy by thermal diffusion. This new dimensionless number is important for commercial heat exchangers because heat is transferred by thermal diffusion across a boundary and then carried away by a flowing fluid. Perform this multiplication, simplify and identify the name of this new dimensionless group.
