A treating plant operating under steady state conditions processes a raw waste liquor containing 500 ppm of a noxious impurity. The impurity is removed with practically no loss of carrier liquid. By local ordinance, a maximum of 100 ppm is allowed in the discharge to a nearby river. The treating process removes all but 10 ppm. What fraction of the waste liquor may be bypassed?
