The Zimbardo experiment of the 1970s put college men into an artificial prison as guards or inmates. The changes in both groups were so profound that the experiment was canceled after six days. About one- third of the guards became brutal and authoritarian, and prisoners became manipulative and exhibited signs of emotional distress and mental breakdown.
