Submit a proposal for your final paper. This document should include a thesis question related to the course material. This question should not be answerable with a simple yes or no response.

For example, "Does racism still exist?" Propose what, how, or why questions, such as, "How is residential segregation perpetuated in the post-civil rights era?" to circumvent this problem. Second, students should propose a thesis statement that directly answers the aforementioned thesis question.

Third, each outline should include an introduction, three substantive sections supporting the thesis statement, sub-points related to each substantive section, and a conclusion.

The sub-points should be a minimum of 2-3 sentences in length and the conclusion a full paragraph. Finally, students should include a reference section that includes at least four academic-related sources (see below for example for formatting).

All outlines should be three-pages in length, and include a title page, substantive page (thesis question/statement, body paragraph summary, conclusion), and reference page (APA formatted).

Meets course objectives 1-3

Final Research Paper

This assignment is a five-page ORIGINAL paper on "Racial/Ethnic Inequality" that includes a cover page and reference page (seven total pages).

The paper should incorporate a minimum of four academic reference from peer reviewed journals or books (see the following list for suggestions), be written following the APA 6th edition found in the online library, answer a specific question about racial inequality, and be "original" in thought.

A paper that answers a specific question will be more likely to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts explored in this course and your ability to apply these concepts in thinking about contemporary society.

Below, a list of potential thesis questions have been provided. If you choose one of these options, please select a narrowly defined question that can be thoroughly answered in a five-page essay. To illustrate, questions such as, "How has immigration affected U.S. society," is too broad. Instead, revise the question to something like the following, "How has immigration affected the purchasing power of American consumers?"

Suggested Questions:

1) Choose a country other than the United States and document the key diversity concerns for that country. What dominant and subordinate groups exist? What are the workforce participation rates, earnings, and employment differences among the groups? Does the country have legislation protecting vulnerable groups? How is diversity in the country you chose similar to or different from diversity in the United States?

2) What is whiteness? How does whiteness shape social policy, everyday interaction, employment decision-making, intimate partner selection, etc.?

3) Potential questions related to mass incarceration: What is mass incarceration? How has mass incarceration affected racial minority communities? What social forces drive mass incarceration? Why does mass incarceration persist? How can mass incarceration and its related consequences be reformed?

4) What factors drive immigration? How does immigration policy affect the fabric of the American society? What role does immigration play in the American society historically, currently, and in the future? How would a border-free immigration policy impact the social and economic system?

5) Communication is a key part of diversity. What effect does America's need for a second national language have on the workforce or educational system of society? Should everyone in the U.S. speak English? What roles does an English only policy have on the global market?

6) How are racial stereotypes used in the media? What effect do they have on public debates about race relations?

7) What is white privilege? What barriers undermine the ability of white people to recognize/acknowledge their skin-based privilege? How can white privilege be exposed?

8) What is colorblind racism? How do co-workers, family members, friends, classmates, etc. practice colorblind racism? How does colorblind racism influence social policy and public dialogue? What are the consequences of colorblind racism on racial minority groups?

9) How does institutional racism vary across countries? What explains observed differences? What do we gain from international comparison?

10) Poverty is the root of many social problems. How does institutional racism affect poverty? How would poverty be affected if the U.S. society embraced egalitarian reforms? What barriers prevent the institution of such reforms? What can be done to overcome such obstacles?
