A patient went to her primary care doctor's office in a nearby clinic for an annual complete examination. While there, she mentioned some health problems she had been having. The doctor sent her to a drawing station in the clinic to have some blood test specimens collected. The young man who collected the blood specimens was polite, nicely groomed, and had the letters PBT (ASCP) after his name on his identification badge. She asked him what they meant and he replied that it meant he was nationally certified. Even though she had started out a little nervous about having her blood drawn, she was impressed by the phlebotomist's professionalism and that he was nationally certified, even though she was not sure what that meant. They made small talk while he collected the specimens, she barely felt the needle go in, and it was over before she knew it. The next day, the doctor's nurse called and told her that the doctor was referring her to an endocrinologist.
