ASSESSMENT TASK: PORTFOLIO

To assess your ability to conduct critical self-review and performance evaluation against appropriate criteria, as a primary means of tracking personal development needs and achievements.

C2 - NARRATIVE OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE FROM THREE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

Recount your experience from three perspectives:

C2.1: YOUR EXPERIENCE AS 'AN EMPLOYEE'

Tell the reader your story as an employee: Write about the organisation(s) you have worked in, what sort of work they do, the size of the organization(s) and where you fit in. Describe the role(s) that you were assigned and the type of work that you did. Also describe who your supervisor(s) was/were and their role(s). Give a brief evaluation of your internship as an employee - was it what you expected?

C2.2: YOUR EXPERIENCE AS 'AN INTERN' (LEARNER)

Tell the reader your story as an on-the-job learner: Write about your 'recognition' as an intern and 'student engineer' by your employer/sponsor. How were you supervised? Were you encouraged to learn 'on the job' - i.e. to learn from your experiences at work? Was this learning consolidated or verified by your employer? Can you cite 'unstructured' experiential learning outcomes - i.e. achievements relevant to your professional insight and future that were not triggered by UTS or employer 'prompting'? Did you have/request a workplace mentor? Give a brief evaluation of your internship as an 'engineer in training' - was it what you 'needed'?

C2.3: YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A FUTURE ENGINEER

Tell the reader your story as a future engineer: Write about the main insights into professional engineering that you have gained from your workplace experience. Do your insights lead you to a different view of your past experiences? Were you working with experienced professional engineers? If 'yes', in what ways were they your role models? [If 'no', how did you deepen your understanding of professional practice?] What examples can you cite? Were there any 'big surprises'? What new insights have you gained on emerging/changing engineering obligations, opportunities and challenges? What is changing, or may need to change, in the specific settings you experienced? What is propelling/might propel such change? Who and/or what has been most influential in shaping your 'developing world view' of engineering practice? What meaning does that hold for you, as you plan for your future? Overall, were you actively engaged with such questions? How? In what respects have you clarified your professional values, aspirations and plans - what have you gained?

C3 - CRITICAL REVIEW OF PRACTICE EXPERIENCE

C3.1: REFLECT ON YOUR WORKPLACE PARTICIPATION AND IDENTIFY LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Identify some key things that you learned before and during your work experience. In particular, we are interested in your reflective learning. Write about 2 key things you have learnt using the Kolb learning cycle (described in the resources on UTSONLINE 'Reflective Learning)'. You should also refer to Appendix 1 in this guide for an explanation of the minimum requirements for reflective writing. Your 2 instancesshould relate to your professional development; limit 'generalisations' and 'superficial commentary'. Each example should exhibit the following 4 stages of Kolb's Learning Cycle (refer to Appendix 3): 1. Concrete Experience (what?); 2. Reflective Observation (Why?); 3. Abstract Conceptualisation (so what?); 4. Active Experimentation (what next?)

C3.2: RELATE THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE GAINED IN YOUR STUDIES TO THE WORK YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED

Were you able to apply anything you learnt at University to the workplace? If so, what and how? Do you think that you will be able to apply anything learnt in the workplace to your university studies?

C3.3: REVIEW YOUR PROCESS OF OBTAINING EMPLOYMENT AND BEGIN TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES FOR GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT

Briefly discuss the process you have used to find and secure work. What 'works' and why? How can you further improve your job seeking skills? What new opportunities are you discovering? Are you making reasonable assumptions and planning wisely?

C3.4: RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND APPROPRIATELY (AS A STUDENT ENGINEER) TO WORKPLACE CHALLENGES REQUIRING ETHICAL JUDGEMENT AND BEHAVIOUR

Find Engineering Australia's Code of Ethics on line and familiarize yourself with it: To what extent did you see ethical

behavior demonstrated by the professional people with whom you worked? Include the understanding of ethical practice that you were witnessing.

There should be general discussion which demonstrates that you are familiar with the Code of Ethics. Also present some specific examples. Do not rely on self-evident examples - like acting honestly or observing the law. Try to highlight dilemmas and/or complex choices, with no self-evident response.

C3.5: DEVELOP AND DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND DOCUMENTATION SKILLS APPROPRIATE TO PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING AND ITS MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDERS, ACROSS A RANGE OF SETTINGS

Outline all the different ways in which Engineers need to communicate and document information on the job. Divide these different ways of communicating into those that are more technical and those that involve communicating in less technical ways. With each of these, think about whether they involve communication with engineers, other professionals (e.g. accountants, managers, etc.) or with clients.

Which of these professional engineering communications skills did you develop as part of your internship?

How was this achieved? Which of these engineering communication skills have you had little experience with? How do you plan to develop these skills?
