Question - In May 2013, the newest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was published. Prior to its publication, there was some publicized controversy over some of the changes to this newest edition.

There have been many changes made to this new edition. Some of them include changes to Neurodevelopmental Disorders (such as the use of the term "intellectual disability" as opposed to "mental retardation"). Persons previously diagnosed as having Pervasive Developmental Disorders now fall under Autism Spectrum Disorders which includes the same diagnoses that previously fell under Pervasive Developmental Disorders. There have been changes made to the category of Psychotic Disorders as well as Bipolar Disorders. Many other new changes and diagnoses have been implemented.
