Question 1. The Canaanite religion was an established religion that focused on fertility. Since most people were farmers or shepherds or depended on farmers or shepherds, the fertility of the land and animals was very important. Famines came, insects sometimes ate the crops, and sometimes drought occurred but in general, crops grew and animals reproduced. The Canaanites thought their gods did that so they worshiped them. The Israelites were tempted to and did worship the Canaanite gods too along with their God. Why do you think the Israelites worshiped the Canaanite gods who promised fertility? What "gods" are we tempted to worship today that promise success? How can we resist those "gods?"

Question 2. What do you think about Hosea's marriage? Did God really tell him to marry a prostitute? Was the marriage just a story invented to make a point? How do you think people responded to his marriage whether it was real or just a story? Why?

Question 3. If we looked at the words of Amos and translated what he said into our day, his words on behalf of God might sound like this. "Don't celebrate Christmas or Easter anymore. I can't stand those celebrations! Nail the church doors shut! Stop passing the plate and taking up offerings! Disband your choirs and praise groups! I can't stand their singing! What you need to do is care about those who are oppressed and help them have freedom and enough! Value them! Live with each other in a righteous way, doing what relationships require with love and patience!" If Amos spoke this just before a worship service today, how do you think people would react? How can we put the call of Amos and God to live with justice and righteousness to all into practice?
