Assignemnt: Social Work

This assignment is designed to sensitize you to attitudes, myths and possible solutions with regards to beliefs of social service programs and/or social justice issues. Each of you individually will conduct 5 (or more) interviews. The interviews can be with random people on campus, family members, or friends. As in our last assignment you can pick a topic of interest to you. You may also consider a topic we have already covered in class, a topic from our text book, or a topic covered in the assigned reading. Ask the following questions:

What do you know about "population of choice" (homeless individuals)
What help do you think population of choice (homeless individuals) receives in our community?
How do you feel about the level of help they receive from the community, the state, the government?
How would you improve or change the systems which provide services for population of choice?

It is important not to engage in a debate! Just listen and thank the individual for participating.

The next part of the assignment is to summarize all of the interviews, what did you discover, were there common themes? Did common myths about the population get portrayed in the interview? Pick out any myths regarding the population or services available for the population, and counter the myths with information you have learned in this class and in your own research.

Did the interview portray strengths of the population of choice? Did the interview portray that the community, state and government was providing adequate services or not enough services or too much services?

What were some of the suggestion to improve the system?

Your paper should be 5-7 pages, and have at least 4 references cited using APA format.
