Now that you've practiced identifying a discourse community that you belong to and discussed the ways in which you code switch, it's time to start thinking about our first project. Carefully read over the prompt for the first project, and think about what you want to write about for this paper. The purpose of this assignment (here) is for you to give me a sense of what you want to focus on for this paper--so that I can give you feedback and ensure that you are on the right track.

Step I:

A. Watch the "Generating Ideas for a Literacy Narrative" Video. (2:39). Write one piece of advice from the video that helps you understand literacy narratives.

B. Carefully read over the assignment sheet. Navigate to the guiding questions for choosing a topic that are linked in the assignment sheet. Read over those questions to pick between the two topics. Briefly brainstorm, as the video describes, some moments in your life you could talk about for this assignment. Then tell me about what you intend to write about for this project. I will give you feedback.

STOP. Before you answer, I want to give you a friendly reminder that your job in this assignment is not to explain what a discourse community or language community is (for example, "a discourse community is..."). Instead, your job with this assignment is to tell us a personal story or series of storiesdivided across snapshots (smaller stories). We should understand throughout project that you are connecting your personal experiences to a concept. For example, if you choose to write about discourse communities, you can tell us a story related to when you tried to join or navigate a new discourse community. It's important that you look at the guiding questions to help you brainstorm.

Will you respond to option 1 or option 2? Elaborate. What discourse community or languages will you focus on? Give me a sense of what you want to write about.

What theme do you want to focus on for the entire narrative? For example, what "lesson" did you learn, or, what big idea do you want us, the audience, to believe after reading your narrative? This is important, because everything you tell us in this story will be focused on this theme. (If you are uncertain, you can suggest two themes for the instructor to provide guidance.)

What are some of the things you want to talk about in your narrative to help support that theme? Remember, your narrative can focus on one specific story for the entire narrative, or it can a couple of connected short stories--but all of them have to be connected to your theme. Why do you think these things (that you want to talk about) will support your theme?

What visual(s) do you think you'll include to support the story? For example, do you have a personal photograph, a screenshot, a brochure, graded paper, etc, that is related to the things you discuss in your story? What can you use to visually illustrate some aspect of your story? How will this visual be connected to the theme of your story? (Note: this image/visual must be personal--not something you found on the internet.)

Step II:

Look over Chapter 3 in your textbook, "Rhetorical Situations".

The first part of this chapter describes what a rhetorical situation is and why it is important for effective writing and communicating. How could you describe rhetorical situation to someone outside of our class who has never heard the phrase and has not read this part of our book? Get the instant assignment help.

The reading lists 6 elements of the rhetorical situation. Which of the 6 elements do you think is the most important for writers to consider? Why do you think this?

Choose two of the elements of the rhetorical situation and describe what you see as the relationship between the two. For example, you could choose genre and audience and then describe what you see as the connection(s) between genre and audience in a piece of writing.

Now, looking over the assignment sheet and thinking about the topic you proposed above, tell me about your audience, your purpose, your genre, stance and context, for your Unit 1 project, using the guiding questions from the chapter to help you. What is the situation for your narrative? How will the audience, genre, purpose, stance, etc affect what you write?
