Ethnomethodology (literally meaning 'the study of the people's methods') is a sociological method interested in the way people make sense of the world and display their understandings of it. The approach was developed by Harold Garfinkel and focuses on the maintenance of social order. Since this involves the taken for granted, ethnomethodologists use a research method that 'breaches' or 'breaks' the everyday routine of interaction in order to reveal the work that goes into maintaining the normal flow of life.
By showing how people can give meaning to an intrinsically meaningless situation, Garfinkel provided insight into the creation and maintenance of reality in everyday life. One of the taken-for-granted assumptions we make in social interaction is that events are relatively orderly and predictable. Thus, we attempt to always make sense out of even the most confusing developments.
