Discussion 1: What's Bothering Trevor?

Our nation is built on a free-market system. The delivery of health care is no exception. The United States spends more per capita than other countries in the world without quality outcomes. It has been stated that the United States is behind in the efficient and timely delivery of care as well as that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to find a resolution to the inefficiencies of the current health care system. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure the delivery of quality health care in the most effective and efficient manner.

This week you will review the simulation titled, What's bothering Trevor: Considering Healthcare - Cost, Quality and Access, in Chapter 1.1 of your course textbook.

Once you have completed reviewing each of the simulations,

• Examine the concerns and issues within each simulation coming from each of the following stakeholder perspectives:

o patient
o family
o health care professionals.

• Determine what could have been done differently to address the issues identified in all the options in relation to cost, quality, and access.

Guided Response: Read through your classmates' posts and find two reviews that differed from yours. If this had happened to you, what actions could you have taken to maintain patient satisfaction with the delivery of quality health care as it relates to cost, quality, and access?

The patient Trevor could be experiencing a life threating illness. The patient is worried about the medical bills because he just lost his job and has no insurance.

Discussion 2: Revolutionary Influences

Chapter two in the textbook discusses the evolution of our health care system. Much of the evolution was due to the political landscape, societal constraints, consumer demand, escalating costs, and the advancement in technology. We have seen legislation and legal cases that have had a major influence on the health care system. After reading the chapter, review the timeline simulation labeled "Global Perspectives" located on the Summary and Resources page from Chapter 2. Consider how the U.S. healthcare system has evolved over the past 50 years.
Choose one of the influencing factors from the timeline and discuss its impact on the system. Provide your rationale as to why you think it has been revolutionary in changing the system.

Guided Response: Review your classmates' posts and find two who posted different factors than you did. Explain how this particular factor has influenced one of the following stakeholders: patient, family, and professionals. Consider how this factor has affected the patient and the family; consider how it has changed the role of the health care professional.
