Wiremu, who was a highly regarded landscape gardener, received a number of complaints about his work. Clients complained that his work seemed erratic - some areas of their property were impeccable, with cleverly designed plantings. Other areas were sparse and almost seemed unfinished. He brushed off these complaints and said that his landscaping highlighted the important parts of these properties. His wife commented these complaints were unusual; she had also noticed some bruising and cuts on his left arm and hand and a couple of scrapes on the left-hand side of his work vehicle. At home he frequently didn't finish his meals, leaving food on one side of his plate, although he often complained he was hungry. Wiremu was also an excellent artist, but his wife noticed his works seemed unequal, with less detail on the left side. His latest work, which was of a group of kereru also showed this. Furthermore each bird was represented with exquisite detail on its right side, but only coarse strokes on the left side. Wiremu had brushed off her comments and said this was part of his developing style. He was generally in good spirits.
