1. What conclusions can you draw about the universal nature of myth, ritual, and psychotherapy? How would you describe the influence of culture on psychotherapy? Can you recall a cross-cultural ritual and explain why it is universal?
2. What is your response to statements A and B?
A. The conclusions that I have drawn seem to be those of the overarching themes of this course, that is that culture and ritual play an immense part in the success of psychotherapy. Throughout this course, I have found it tremendously interesting that these factors seem to be all but unaccounted for in most lines of psychotherapy, and that considerations for one's culture are often not at the forefront of concern for people in the line of work. One's culture plays an immense part in their life and helps determine who they are, and rejecting these ideas in turn is rejecting that person.
B. Some conclusions that I have drawn about the universal nature of myths, rituals, and psychotherapy are that there are a lot of issues that could make it harder to have successful therapy if the client's myths, religion, and rituals are not taken into consideration. Culture has a lot of influence on psychotherapy because some people may be so much in their culture that they are not willing to see anything outside of it. There also may be the influence of making sure that the culture is taken into consideration for the psychotherapy to be successful. There are some cross cultural rituals. One main one is that of death and how it is perceived by each culture. This is universal because all cultures experience death and they are all going to have their own ways of mourning.
