Case Study: History: Your hypertensive patient with hyperlipidemia prefers "natural" approaches for their care. Today's triglyceride levels are elevated due to a reported "sweet tooth." The patient takes fish oil supplements and niacin to help with these issues. They know they must reduce their "bad" cholesterol level to improve cardiovascular (CV) risk. They also believe that changing their cholesterol profile to include more high-density lipoprotein (HDL) will improve their CV risk status.
Questions:
1. What does the 2019 omega-3 research suggest as the necessary dosing required for triglyceride therapy? (Search for the study).
2. Are there RX strength medications on the market?
3. What concern with OTC medication sources are eliminated with U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) RX approved omega-3 medications?
4. How you respond to the patient's suggestion to use niacin for their care?
5. Have the students search for research studies on changes in HDL levels. It has long been proposed that if only we can increase the "good" cholesterol then CV risk would drop. What is the present evidence regarding HDL?
6. When did we obtain the first evidence that low-density lipoprotein (LDL) decrease could actually drop CV risk?
