Chapter 9, forgiveness is a prosocial behavior that is associated with better mental health and higher relationship satisfaction. However, a distinction could be made between intrapsychic and interpersonal forgiveness. Intrapsychic forgiveness involves letting go of the anger and hurt that someone has caused us. It reflects an inner, positive shift in feelings about the transgression. Interpersonal forgiveness involves communicating to someone that you forgive them. It is more of an external process that may or may not align with how we are actually feeling.

What circumstances might give rise to intrapsychic but not interpersonal forgiveness? That is, when might you withhold the communication of forgiveness despite no longer being upset or anger about the transgression? Alternatively, what circumstances might give rise to interpersonal but not intrapsychic forgiveness? That is, when might you communicate to someone that they are forgiven, despite inwardly ruminating or holding a grudge?
