Describe the major structural and functional features of the cerebellum in the control of movement. Your answer should include the major cell types, circuits and neurotransmitters.
Include in answer and describe with following information as well:
Describe the organization and include structures: (cerebellar hemispheres, cerebellar cortex (cerebrocerebellum, spinocerebellum (including vermis), vestibulocerebellum), deep cerebellar nuclei, cerebellar peduncles)
the major sources of inputs to the cerebellum. (frontal and parietal cortices, spinal cord, vestibular nuclei, and inferior olive)
What cell types in the cerebellum are the major targets of afferent inputs? **Purkinje cells and granule cells
What cells are the output neurons of the cerebellum? (cells in the deep cerebellar nuclei: dentate, interposed and fastigial nuclei)
What are the major output targets from the cerebellum? (premotor and motor cortex, vestibular nuclei, reticular formation. The later two in turn project to lower motor neurons in the medial ventral horn)
Explain and describe the main function of the cerebellum? (motor coordination, detection of motor errors and work with upper motor neurons to correct the errors, and motor learning and memory, maintenance of posture and equilibrium)
