Question: It is early in the morning, and you are ready for your morning run. You sit on a bench next to the track to re-tie your shoes, which have mysteriously come undone. As your hands sweep across the grass, you get a deep cut in your hands from an unseen piece of glass. Annoyed by the situation, you wrap a tissue around your hand and go for your usual 5-mile run. After the run, you realize you will be late for your calculus exam unless you hurry. As a result, you take the fastest possible shower and do nothing to disinfect your cut hand. It has stopped bleeding, but there is a significant opening in your skin. Unfortunately, the day is busy, and you fall asleep that night with the hand still untreated. By morning, your writing is inflamed and swollen, and you have a slight fever. What caused this tissue changes overnight? What defense mechanisms have been launched by the immune system?
