There are critical stages and sensitive stages in development.

Sensitive periods generally refer to a limited time window in development during which the effects of experience on the brain are unusually strong, whereas a critical period is defined as a special class of sensitive periods where behaviors and their neural substrates do not develop normally if appropriate stimulation does not occur.

For example, if a pregnant woman abuses drugs during a critical stage of fetal development, the parts of the brain that were growing at that time will never develop normally because it cannot be "made up" , Whereas if a child does not receive sensory input during a sensitive stage, he may or may not be able to "make it up".

Some language theorists argued that language is developed during a critical stage and cannot be "made up" and some argue that language is developed during a sensitive stage and a child can catch up due to neural plasticity of the brain.
