Discussion 1: Class, what are your thoughts about Mellody as you review her minibiography here? Sometimes people speak from experience, and it seems that Mellody certainly does.
Anything that pops out to you about Ms. Hobson that connects to this very well watched TedTalk?

Discussion 2: Religion is often used in the United States in politics and other institutions. Yet we have First Amendment freedom of religion rights. This month there are issues associated with displays in many areas. How should these issues be addressed?
Discussion 3: Years ago, I did a research project on the issue of policing in a diverse environment. My conclusion was that when the police department is nearly equal in diversity to the town or city, there were less complaints about mistreatment based on ethnicity and race. Women also make up a minority with regard to policing and fire department employees.
Hiring in your own areas, class does equal treatment depend on diversity in hiring?
Discussion 4: Society (which is us) reinforces these ideas and beliefs and women may not be chosen for positions that demand strength because crying is seen as "weak". This isn't the case, however, in all cultures. Some cultures accept crying as strength and a sign of humanity.
Are there other examples you all can think of that are based on stereotypical beliefs?
Discussion 5: In Chapter 3, Discrimination is explained in detail. Hate crimes are shown in figure 3.2, with sexual orientation coming up as 21% of all reported hate crimes. Yet, crimes associated with gender are not included here. We often call those crimes "domestic violence". Now, of course many crimes against women are domestic violence crimes, but not all. Learning stereotypes, like how boys should look and how girls should look can lead to crimes later in life, not to mention how girls and boys are treated so differently.
Institutional discrimination also links to these types of stereotypes and discrimination. How?
Discussion 6: Write five sentences on ethnicity and religion
Discussion 7: Class, stereotypes are everywhere and may be positive or negative. Examples of positive stereotypes?
