Over the Coffee Cup: In you coffee talk, be sure to answer all five questions:
Question 1) What three topics interest you the most in the areas of philosophy and ethics? For philosophy, you could list the existence of God, the nature of human beings, good and evil, the afterlife, free will, suffering, and so on. For ethics, you could also discuss the death penalty, the legalization of drugs, or an issue related to health care (e.g., abortion, physician- assisted suicide, confidentiality, and so on). List three philosophical topics or three ethical issues and share why they're of interest to you. You can also choose to do a mix of both philosophical and ethical topics. Have fun!
Question 2) Can you think of an element of popular culture - music, film, television, humor, etc - that addresses a philosophical or an ethical issue? If so, what is it? Feel free to list a song, movie, or sitcom (an example would be Pink's song Respect and how it is consistent with Kant's ethical view of respect for persons).
Question 3) How do you think this class can benefit you as a nursing/allied health major? List at least two ways this class can benefit you personally. Or you can also list two ways this class can benefit a healthcare team. Or you could do a mix of both (yourself and a team of healthcare professionals). Be specific.
Question 4) What are the three building blocks of an Educated Citizen? Next, offer a brief description of each of the three building blocks.
Question 5) If you were a college instructor and wanted to add a fifth question for your students to answer during Week 1, which is 'Foundations Week, what question would you ask your students? Your question could be related to philosophy, ethics, nursing/allied health, all three, none of the above, and so on. Why is it important for your students to answer and discuss your question? Be specific.
