Q. MHC class I is a molecule involved in immune system. In mice, class I MHC is derived from 2 (sometimes 3, but we will ignore that for now) loci- D and K, with several alleles possible at each loci- including d,b, and k. Expression of class I derived from these loci involves another molecule, β2m (beta-2-microglobulin) that is coded for at another locus. An inbred mouse that expresses Db and Kb is crossed with an inbred mouse that expresses no class I MHC. The F1 offspring are all DbKbKk.
1. What is the interaction of different alleles at class I K locus?
2. What is the genotype of the parent not expressing any class I MHC (including class I MHC and β2m)?
3. What are the expected genotypes of F2?
4. What are the expected phenotypes of F2?
5. What are the ratios of the phenotypes in F2?
Assume that there are 63 different naturally occurring amino acids. If all 64 possible combinations of bases for a codon resulted in coding for 63 different amino acids and one stop codon, which of the next mutations would NOT be possible.
Chooses the statement that best describes a buffer. A buffer prevents pH of a solution from changing while an acid or base is added.
What fraction of offspring of the cross AabbDd x AaBbdd are expected to have the same phenotype as either one of their parents assume that all three genes are on different chromosomes.
If the genes were expressed in the cell, predict that signal would win out for the following combinations. Give details your reasoning.
Multicellular animals have some mechanism to control cell mass that we do not understand; for in case, salamanders of different ploidies are the same size such that a haploid, a diploid, and a pentaploid organism are about the same size.
Darwin understood how natural selection works in the presence of a population with many variant types. What does that variation consist of? How does variation arise? How does it spread during the population.
The man married with a woman whose sister had galactosemia. The woman is now pregnant with their first child. What is the possibility that this child will have galactosemia.
Assuming that genotype essential to produce flat tails is homozygous recessive (such as bb) compute the frequency of the b allele in the squirrel population to two decimal places.
What is hydrogenase? How can this enzyme be used as part of a strategy to "improve" a Rhizobial strain used to inoculate legumes? Describe logic and provide the appropriate diagram.
How could you explain the occurrence of birth defects (caused by altered genes) in children and grandchildren of WWII atomic bomb victims, while the victims themselves were only mildly affected.

A student designs an experiment to create an alcohol known as butanol. She mixes a species of Clostridium bacteria known to produce this alcohol as a by-product of its metabolism with a broth of water and glucose in excess, and incubates the mixture ..
