Contemporary Management Assignment - Case Discussions
Task - This task this assessment is primarily about 'doing' management work through structured online conversations. Your online conversations for this assessment involve critical thought about the knowledge gained in the subject and its practical application to solving real problems.
These management problems are posed within the subject topics, in two forms - elevator pitches and case discussion activities relating to mini case studies.
Complete two (2) case discussion activity response, as follows: two(2) case discussion activity responses.
Case 1 - Garvin, D., Natarajan, G. & Dowling, D. (2014). Can a strong culture be too strong?. Harvard Business Review, 92(1/2), 113-117.
We are returning to the case of Parivar, the Chennai-based IT services company that we first met in Topic 8. Now, we will extend the discussion from corporate culture into the domain of organisational design. As you will see, there is a very close connection between organisation design and organisation culture. That's why we are revisiting this case.
As we begin this topic, consider what the organisation structure in Parivar might look like. Would it be, for example, more bureaucratic or more organic?
Would it have a fairly flat, team-based structure, or a taller, hierarchical structure?
How would you describe the structure in this company, from what you can interpret in the case?
Do you think that the country of origin, India, makes any difference to the type of structure in Parivar?
Case 2 - McNulty, E., Calcidise, K., Benton, Cohen, D. S. & Aversano, N. (2002). Welcome aboard (But don't change a thing). Harvard Business Review, 80(10), 32-40.
If you've worked in management for some time, you may relate to this case. It's classic illustration of organisations that reach out for change, but then falter, because it is too scary or too courageous, or too ... something else. This case engages with the GREAT BIG challenge of entrepreneurship.
What are the problems that Cheryl Hailstrom faces in this case, as you perceive them? In other words, consider two aspects:
- the problems she believes that she is experiencing
- other problems that you perceive she is facing, whether she recognises these or not.
Work through the case and make two lists. Take into account, but don't be limited by, the commentary offered by the four experts.
