What are the objectives of a good mentoring system for international assignees? What mentoring activities support these objectives? What are the characteristics of a good mentor?

A successful mentoring system for international assignees should ensure successful cultural adjustment. The mentor focuses on the expatriate's perspective of being left out because of the international assignment. The textbook uses the "out-of-sight" and out-of-mind" feelings that expatriates often experience being far from home. International jobs often alienate managers from the company in their home country, which can impact the productivity and success of the expatriate (Dowling, Festing & Engle, Sr.,1). A mentor will develop a solid communication system with the expatriate throughout their assignment in the foreign country. The communication includes keeping the expatriate updated on what is happening in the home country and following up on their adjustment. Mentors often work with the expatriate during the "Repatriation" or re-entry process, assisting with placement in a position upon return.   Generally, an excellent mentoring program focuses on the expatriate's adjustment to the new country and often on the process of returning to the home country.   It has been discussed that a successful mentoring program will promote retention and ensure the expatriate's success in an international assignment.
