The fouling of our air, water, and food supply is a problem for humanity and also for the entire biosystem. One century is a short time in the history of mankind and shorter yet in the history of the Earth. And yet, we have seen over the past century so many changes of this nature. Some of the changes might be expected--if thought about our actions beforehand--but most are surprising because of the unpredictability of changes that affect so many plants and animals.

What are the forces that tend to prevent us from turning this process around?
