Problem
Case Scenario:
You are a social worker at an early intervention agency that provides services to preschool age children and their families. A client has been referred to you due to some concerns identified by the mother, the pediatrician, and pre-school teacher.
Client Information:
Jonathan has just turned five years old and will hopefully be attending kindergarten in the fall. He was referred by his physician after the preschool teacher had shared concerns with Jonathon's parents about some possible delays in his development.
Jonathan has still not mastered the use of the toilet and soils his pants with urine approximately once a day. Although his classmates are able to interact with others, Jonathan tends to play in the corner with cars. He does not move the cars around, but lines them up as if they are trains. If another child wants to play, Jonathan tends to push them away or block them. He seems to have limited interest in playing with the other children. If other children happen to disrupt his "train" of cars, then Jonathan will seem to have an anxious meltdown.
Jonathan will sit at the table during drawing activities, but does not seem to understand the concept of learning to write. The other children are starting to make out shapes, colors, and numbers. Jonathan states that his favorite color is blue, but mixes it up with purple and black when given the opportunity to choose an object of blue color. Jonathan can dress himself and insists on buttoning and zipping his own clothes.
Jonathan seems to be in his own world at times. He will watch other children, but seems to prefer to be off to the side during his observations. The mother shared that she recently took him to the indoor trampoline park. Although he was in the section where other children his age were located, he did not interact with any other children. In fact, the noise in the trampoline park made by the other children seemed to irritate him.
