Two factors drive whether you find someone initially attractive: whether you perceive the person as offering the kinds of rewards you think you deserve in a romantic relationship (affection, emotional support, money, sex), and whether you think that the rewards the person can offer you are superior to those you can get elsewhere (Kelley & Thibaut, 1978). In simple terms, you're attracted to people who can give you what you want and who offer better rewards than others.
