Disempowerment and loss of human agency: In a technology-oriented society, nearly every action we can perform (what ethicists call "agency") is performed by technology such as computers, telephones, or by third parties. are mediated. Examples: banks, retail supply chains, telcos, internet service providers, identity providers, etc. From an ethical standpoint, the fact that our actions are mediated can discourage us from the consequences of our decisions and actions. I often keep away. More fundamentally, the proliferation of technology-mediated phenomena is alienating us from social norms of equality, fairness and justice, thereby questioning our basic understanding of what it means to be human. The power asymmetry between individuals/users and service providers (both commercial and public) makes us feel helpless and loses human agency.
