Task 1:

Question 1. What are ocean gliders, how do they work and what variables do they measure?

Question 2. Use the Seaglider deployment from Oct-Dec 2009 (NSW20091019, subset time 0 to 900,000, every 3 or 4 points) To describe the watermasses of different eddies. In Taskicular, focus on the 2 first loops and the last large one. Are these cyclonic or anticyclonic eddies? Plot and discuss the temperature and salinity profiles and estimate the mixed layer depth. Finally, compare these eddies to the ones studied using Argo floats in practical 1.

Task 2:

Question 3. Use the Slocum glider deployed off Yamba in Oct -Nov 2018 until the 8th of Nov (Yamba20181031, subset time 0 to 320,000, every 3 or 4 points). Quantify the strongest southward current (speed) and compare it to the relevant seasonal mean of the East Australian Current studied using HF radars in practical 2. Draw a scatter-plot of the glider temperature over time (x=axis) and depth (y-axis). Is the strong southward flow warm or cold (focus on 0-20m depth)? Is this what you expect for the EAC?

Question 4. Using the same mission (Yamba20181031), focus on a wind-driven upwelling occurring around the 4th of OctoberNovember 2018 and compare its intensity and duration to the one studied in practical 3 using shelf moorings. Do you see a response in chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen following the upwelling? Make sure you insert the relevant ODV plots.
