Assignment:

The Story of Flingledobe and Pribin

In the attached link, two stories are presented-the first with words that we know and the second with unknown words. When people read them, they find it easier to understand the second story. In the first one, it will be difficult to understand if you don't have a background knowledge of that topic.

QUESTION: From the story presented in the video, how did it develop the reading comprehension of watching that story? What are the connections to some of the cognitive processes?

More information to help to understand the question:

  • A big part of comprehending what you read involves relating what you are reading to what you already know and have experienced. So if you have broad life experience or exposure to a lot of different topics, then you will have more success. This is why our background knowledge is so important in reading and why the content of what we have children read is also important. Children have very different sets of life experiences, which can help or hinder their success in reading comprehension (and their ability to practice basic reading skills).
  • Within the context of reading comprehension, metacognition relates to thinking and reflecting on your reading process. For example, doing comprehension monitoring - asking oneself such questions as "Did I understand that?" or "I don't know that word, but are there parts of that word similar to words that I know?" and other questions when there is difficulty understanding.
