Case Study: You will be caring for a 65-year-old male patient who was admitted to the medical/surgical unit with complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting.

The patient is a Vietnam veteran, unmarried, homeless and has no children. Past medical history includes chronic back pain and several suicidal attempts. Past social history includes smoking and heavy drinking.

Depression has a strong association with suicide. The probability of attempted or successful suicide in depressive people is much higher than for the general population.

You will be caring for the patient at 7:30 am at the start of a 12-hour shift. The simulation scenario is the initial encounter with the patient where you will perform a focused assessment based on the patient's medical/surgical condition and any other presenting assessment findings.
