Saffiyah is an epidemiologist that is trying to determine the etiology of an emerging disease in a primarily agricultural community. She divided her participants into groups based on socioeconomic status. Her team followed the health of the participants for a few years. They found that the group below the poverty line was most at risk for contracting the disease, and was strongly correlated to working with chickens in one farm. The disease seemed to affect workers at the farm only after they have worked there for a year or more. No one else in the community, including the people the workers lived with, seemed to come down with the illness.
