Question
What an amazing experience! I have obtained so much knowledge throughout this course. I am grateful to expand my knowledge, of behaviors and systems that have a positive and or negative affect on child development, and in doing so I have discovered some of my own character traits and behaviors that have their direct or indirect cause. (Diana Baumrind), research on parenting styles, which I was raised in an Authoritarian child-rearing home, gives me the ability to see myself in some of the behaviors that I displayed as a teenager. "Do as I say"! Although, I developed autonomy, I sometimes did not carefully consider the consequences of my decisions, it is my belief now, that I knew my parents would say no, therefore, I did what I did regardless of the consequences. Sad, because if they understood the correct way to parent, I believe they would have done better, which leads me to the next question.
I must believe that a professional, caregiver, parent etc. would have to become more effective because as the course is studied and the research is proven, and one can see themselves in the research, whether, good, or bad, or indifferent, the way one has been affected in their own lives would affect the way they engage in the importance of child development. When you know better, you do better! The ability to see oneself in the research and to have a point of reference to where things went wrong and not change one's own concept, is not beneficial for children.
I had 26 of the developmental assets and do not believe that the number that a person has affects the outcome. The reasoning behind my answer is that we did not consider biology, and genetics, or temperament, which is a part of the system of self-regulation of emotions. Because temperament develops with age a parent who is rigid and overbearing can have a direct effect on child development, regardless of the amount of assets that are in place.
