Question 1. The daily average energy consumption values for heating in three successive quarters are given by 32.9 GJ, 27.74 GJ and 30 GJ. The corresponding degree day values are 1000, 800 and 900.
(i) Find out the heat loss rate (H) and energy consumption by hot water (W) using the data from the first two quarters.
Also, estimate the energy consumption value using the values of H and W obtained in (i) and compare with the actual energy consumption value in quarter 3. Comment on whether energy has been wasted or saved in quarter 3.
Question 2. The walls of a house have 4 inch face brick, R-32 insulation, 3.5 inch wood frames, 0.5 inch plywood and the cavity constitutes 70% of the total wall area. The thermal resistances of the outdoor and indoor air films are 0.17 hr-ft2-F/BTU and 0.68 hr-ft2-F/BTU. The thermal resistances of the 4 inch face brick, 3.5 inch wood frames, R-32 insulation and 0.5 inch plywood are 0.4 hr-ft2-F/BTU, 3.59 hr-ft2-F/BTU, 32 hr-ft2-F/BTU and 0.62 hr-ft2-F/BTU, respectively.
(i) What is the U-factor of the wall?
(ii) If the total wall area is (100*(x+1)) ft2, floor perimeter is 240 ft, total roof area (opaque) is (100*(x+2)) ft2, total windows and door area is (100*x) ft2, infiltration volume flow rate of 5000 cubic feet/hour and ventilation volume flow rate of 15 cubic feet/minute. If the U-factors of the roof, ‘windows and door' are 0.023 and 0.32 BTU/hr-ft2-F andthe F-value of the floor is 0.42 BTU/hr-ft-F, calculate the building load coefficient (BLC). Here x is the last digit of your student id.
Question 3. A home owner is planning to install R-19 insulation in the walls. The initial costs are $(300+x). This results into an energy savings of 300 kWh annually. The electricity price is (30+x) cents/kWh. How much will be the energy cost savings annually? If the investment lasts for 10 years, what will be the internal rate of return? Assuming MARR=10%. Is the project cost-effective? Here x=last digit of your student id. The interest table is in page 2.
Question 4. A client from Hobart is planning to build a house. The client is planning to use double glazing in south windows. The client is planning to choose a floor plan which has more windows in West and less in North. The insulation rating of the walls is R4 and the insulation rating of the ceiling is R2. The client is planning to have high ceilings. The client is planning to use sheer curtains for the windows. The client is opting for a higher energy star rating heating device. The client meets you to get some advice to improve the energy efficiency of the house. What advice can you provide to the customer based on the information you are given?
