The text discusses the cultural influences on sensation, perception and states of consciousness. We consider how our culture strongly influences how we perceive the world around us and interpret events, in turn influencing our behavior. I ask you to think critically about how we Americans perceive the world. Please answer the following questions.
1. What cultural influences in American life contribute the most to the way we perceive and think about the world? For example, some believe that modern tehcnology like the internet, or Hollywood movies, or TV, shape ur perceptions more than our schools or parents. Others argue that our chosen circle of friends tend to reinforce and shape our opinions and behavior. Still others point to the constant barrage of advertising as the main influence on our behavior.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages (if any) of the various influences on our cultural perceptions?
3. If you could do anything about these influences, which would you change, and why? Be specific.
