Assignment title - Portfolio - Analytic overview of a small business/company

Purpose of this assignment - This assignment has the main purpose of initiating students to the basics of business analysis using various information from a company and utilising different tools to understand its position on the market and assess its viability.

Scenario - You recently joined a small business (Hospitality Business) which is looking for some fresh ideas to expand its business in the changing market scenario in UK as head of the operations. You are expected to investigate the competitiveness of this business, identifying its key strengths and weaknesses in relation to its closest competitors.

Note that the second part of the assignment uses the same business and will require that you gain access to business and corporate objectives and goals. It is therefore important that you are able to gather internal information about the business.

PART 1: Prepare a BUSINESS PORTFOLIO

Question 1: BUSINESS PROFILE

Discuss a specific small business profile using the template provided on STPMoodle. The following points should be discussed: Name, Type of business, physical address, a brief history of the company, Market sector, Key sector trends, their Business strategy and/or objectives, Management and Ownership, some financial information with the calculation of at least one ratio, explanation of their performance, current customers and any future plans.

Question 2: COMPETITORS ANALYSIS

Provide an analysis using the Competitor analysis template provided on STPMoodle which will investigate 'a chosen business' strengths and weaknesses compared to at least one of its closest direct competitors

Conclude your previous analyses with written recommendations to improve the business performance in various areas.

Question 4: STRENGTHEN PERFORMANCE and EXPANSION SUGGESTIONS

Discuss ways to maintain and strengthen your chosen business' performance.

Your business is planning to expand their portfolio, provide justification for expansion.

Question 5: ASSESSMENT and REVISION OF OBJECTIVES AND PLANS

Using the template provided, make an assessment of existing business objectives and plans and revise these plans (for new product line) as appropriate.

Complete an action plan to indicate how your suggestions will be established. This will include responsibilities, resources required, predictable impacts, and timescales.

The ways in which these changes will be managed in the business.

Explain how the changes can be monitored, to ensure and assess their effectiveness.
