Instructions and Evaluation

A response paper is between a summary and a critical analysis. This means you should both describe the main arguments, topics, and/or themes of the readings and include your own take on them. Your response paper is not a formal writing assignment like an essay, but you should still use complete sentences, paragraphs, and provide a logical structure.
Characteristics of excellent response papers include:
• Discussion of all that class readings (or videos, podcasts, sources, etc.), including properly cited (parenthetical or footnotes) direct quotes or references
• Placing readings or different elements of the readings in dialogue with each other (if there is more than one reading)
• Connecting that week's readings, topics, and themes to materials covered earlier in the semester
• Incorporating both summary that shows you understood the reading and analysis that shows you are thinking critically
• All response papers must end with a possible discussion question. I will use suggested discussion questions in class to guide our conversation
