Question: Properly understanding the diverse health issues faced by different ethnicities populations it's important for developing effective and culturally competent healthcare interventions. The two emerging populations that I picked are Latino/Hispanic Americans vs. Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders. These two populations have distinct health profiles influenced by genetic, cultural, socioeconomic and environmental factors.
Diabetes and Obesity
Latino/ Hispanic Americans have a higher prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Contributing factors are primarily dietary habits along with physical inactivity and some are genetic predisposed to insulin resistance. Obesity and diabetes can lead to further risk such as cardiovascular disease. Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders have a lower prevalence of obesity and diabetes, but some subgroups do have a risk due to diet and lifestyle. Both populations have similar risks, but Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders have a lower overall risk (Edelman & Kudzma, 2022).
Cardiovascular Disease
High rates of obesity and diabetes contribute to cardiovascular disease such as hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Asian American/Pacific Islanders have lower rates of cardiovascular disease (Edelman & Kudzma, 2022).
Cancer
Asian Americans have higher incidence rates of gastric cancer and liver cancer. Latino/Hispanic Americans have lower rates of cancers but are more prevalent for certificate and colorectal cancer. Both populations experience high mortality rates due to lack or routine screenings and preventative care (Edelman & Kudzma, 2022).
