This assignment will enable the students to demonstrate their understanding of the literary elements and devices, as well as the style and language use by the authors in the short stories studied in the course through a critical analysis essay. It will also enable students to understand the characters and their actions through a personal response essay and finally students creativity will also be explored through a poem dramatization task.

Task 1- Critical Analysis Essay: Individual

Select any ONE short story that you have explored in class that appeals to you.

Short story:

1. Two kinds by Amy Tan

2. An ounce of cure by Alice Munroe

3. A worn path by Eudora Welty

4. A&P by John Updike

Write an essay of 1000 words to analyse the story based on the following:

-Theme

-Characters

-Plot

-Literary Devices

-Language and style

Essay Guidelines:

-Introduction: brief description of the story

-Content: analysis of the story (theme, characters, plot, literary devices, language and style)

-Closure: include a conclusion, summarizing all points and may include personal opinions
