Cultural Competence in Health Care Practice Autumn 2015 Assessment tasks

Assessment 1 - Poster and Essay

Task Description - This assessment provides students with the opportunity to design a poster targeted at nursing professionals, which explains the concept of cultural competency when delivering health care to the Australian Indigenous population

The poster should:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the concept of Cultural Competency
  • Illuminate related concepts such as: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity, cultural safety & cultural respect
  • Be submitted on a Power Point slide saved as a pdf.
  • Include references for images/graphics on a separate slide

A one thousand word essay should accompany the poster. The essay will:

  • Provide the rationale for the design of the poster, based on evidence from the academic literature
  • Define the concept of Cultural Competency (sourced from the literature) and analyse its strengths and limitations
  • Describe the multifaceted nature of culturally competent health care delivery to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Assessment 2 - Major Essay

Task Description - "Achieving cultural competence in health care is everybody's responsibility". (National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) 2006, p. 3). Based on your readings to date and your understanding of Cultural Competency in health care practice, discuss the key learning you have derived from engagement with this subject including how you might change your practice as a result of new knowledge gained.

The essay must demonstrate the following:

  • A critical reflection of your own cultural values and privileges
  • A strengths-based approach that respects diversity and celebrates difference
  • A convincing argument that inspires the reader to consider the cultural needs of a person from one of the following groups who is preparing to undergo an annual general health assessment:

1. A non-English speaking adult refugee recently arrived with his wife and young family from a country at war

2. A non-English speaking female immigrant who is recently married and practices a different religion to your own

3. A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Intersex (LGBTI) 18 yr. old teenager, who has recently moved to the area, is single and lives alone

This assignment requires us to write 2,000 words with at least 15- 20 references. In fact, the journal articles should not be less than 5 years and an academic book should not be less than 10 years. The assignment worth 60% of the total marks and the referencing should be in Harvard style. The question is "Achieving Cultural competence in health care is everyone's responsibility". The due date has been recently changed from 27 October to 13 October, so please take care of it. Thanks.
