Blood transfusions are a common procedure used to treat patients with low iron anemia.

Because we cannot mimic blood, donated blood is administered into the vein via an intravenous line or IV. Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are the most common to be transfused. These red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carry carbon dioxide waste to the lungs to be exhaled. Depending on the amount of blood being transfused this procedure can last 1-4 hours.

The protein hemoglobin carries oxygen into our red blood cells. When there are too little or too few red blood cells this can result in anemia. Low iron is the most common cause of anemia. Because Iron is essential for hemoglobin synthesis, Ferrous sulfate is taken for several months to help replenish low levels. Iron supplementation can be taken orally by capsule or liquid form.

It is important for any health care professional to know the signs and symptoms of anemia because symptoms are often overlooked. Being aware will allow for a quick diagnosis and speedy recovery.
